ABOUT SPITFIRE LEGEND

Southampton is the birthplace of the world’s most famous aeroplane, the Supermarine Spitfire. In the summer of 2019, one lucky Southampton resident will take off in a Spitfire from Southampton Airport on the adventure of a lifetime. The prototype Spitfire flew from Southampton Airport in 1936, and this is the year the Spitfire comes home.

During Southampton’s Blitz when thousands of bombs were dropped on the city, it was local residents and businesses who continued manufacturing the Spitfire after the Supermarine factory was destroyed in 1940. Using bus stations, launderettes, shops, and garages, the people of Southampton valiantly kept Spitfire production going throughout Britain’s darkest hour, keeping Europe free from tyranny.

Solent Sky believes every resident of the city shares this great heritage. In partnership with the Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar and Southampton International Airport, Solent Sky will select the winner of the Spitfire Legend prize by lottery. The competition is free to enter and is open to all residents of SO postcodes who are 18 years or over.
